How it all began

Welcome to the Unbearable Lightness of Reading! I registered our book club at the local Chapter 11 bookstore to get discounts for the group on our book selections. The clerk told me that we needed to have a name in order to register, so I had to come up with a name on the fly. We'd just read Milan Kundera's book, and that was the obvious inspiration for our name.

I joined the group about 6 years ago after being invited by the only friend I made during a brief employment stint at MindSpring. I hated the job, but looking back, it was worth all the suffering to be able to join the club.

So, here's how our book club works. The group consists of 11 women. We meet the last Tuesday of the month, and the host selects the book, feeds the group, and leads the discussion. December is a potluck holiday party, and we select the books for the coming year. We started keeping a scrapbook (although none of us are scrapbookers), and each month, we add notes about the books we've read. We've lost a few members -- one recently had twins, and another moved back to NY just this week -- and I though a blog would be a good way for us to stay in touch.

Happy reading!

Thanks to Pam for setting this up! Can we blog about anything or should it just be about books? Like can I say that I'm sitting here and eating hershey's kisses so that I can get as much chocolate ingested as possible before joining Weight Watchers on Saturday? Or that I'm going to have lunch today with people that work with me, and that it's going to take every piece of restraint that I have not to manage them while I'm on this maternity leave? Or perhaps something about this guy that has the drug resistant straing of TB who traveled all over the country and what an incredibly selfish asshole he seems to be? That is definitely got made for TV movie written all over it.

I think we should talk about whatever we want! Especially since our book club conversations move quickly from the book to other, often more interesting, discussions!

Hey from NYC! I started my job today, head down to Wilmington, NC tomorrow for a shoot and found an amazing apartment tonight. All in all, a pretty good start. I'm reading "The Queen's Fool" by Phillipa Gregory who also wrote "The Other Boleyn Girl." I'm enjoying it. Not the best I've ever read but entertaining enough for my short attention span. Miss you all and put your card in the place of honor in my temp apt -- on top of the TV. Thanks, Pam -- I'll be interested to follow. Hope you'll summarize the most outrageous, i.e, fun/funny/crazy, discussion points of each book club. I'll be checking in.
